#Straight Outta Misogyny. The Women Begin to Speak! Big Up to Dee Barnes

Image result for dee barnesYesterday, I was praising Katie Barnes for her article revealing the misogyny in Straight Outta Compton. Today, I’m praising another Barnes (no relation, I presume). Sista Dee for speaking out about the violence she experienced at the hands of Dr. Dre.

Black women will not stand for our experience to be surgically removed from the story and for the violence against us to be glorified, trivialized or glossed over.

straight outta misogyny

Barnes’ article is brave, thoughtful, and informative for those of us who have no clue what goes on behind the scenes in the rapper world. The following lines spoke to me as a great Truth. “There is a direct connection between the oppression of black men and the violence perpetrated by black men against black women. It is a cycle of victimization and reenactment of violence that is rooted in racism and perpetuated by patriarchy.” The cycle can only be broken through women like Dee Barnes speaking up and others like yourself sharing her message.
