Flashback Friday: “Deciding to Marry Myself” in Essence Magazine

I’ve been excited to see self-marriage in the press these days. Here’s an article I wrote for Essence back in ’97 about my own self marriage:

    Dearest Aya,

Thank you for being the big sister to my Corinita! She has had an excellent, courageous, highly intellectual and intelligent, joyful, glorious, indomintable, clever, educated, lyrical, poetic, revolutionary, civil rights activist, legal minded, multiple public persona presenter, entertainer, mystery writer, actress, producer/director, comedienne, United States Presidential Contender, Author, spicy, sparkly, full-of-spit and full-of-life ROLE MODEL in you.

I can never repay your love, nurturing, compassion, kindness, and attention that you have so lavishly bestowed upon my daughter, Corina. All the worry, fear, grief, sadness, sorrow, anger, frustration was worth it… Corina has found her way, and you have been a pillar of support for her.

Please give my gratitude to your mother for her part… and to your husband…

Sending all my love to you and your beloved family members,

    Teresa Lucille Peila
