My latest for KQED Pop: “Why Can’t We Get A Strong Female Lead in a Cop Show Without #ViolenceAgainstWomen?”

Mobster Stock Photos, Illustrations, and Vector ArtThe media seems to have a tradeoff formula: we can see brilliant, complex, seasoned women as cop show protagonists, if we’re willing to accept storylines of young women and girls getting raped and murdered. Unacceptable. Read all about it in my latest for KQED Pop.

Meanwhile, in related news, this week I’ve been searching for stock images to inspire me as I work on my feminist heist novel. Unfortunately, when you type “woman burglar” into a google search, you find as many images of women being robbed as you do of women robbers. Please see above. Of course, the reverse is not true when you search for “male burglars,” which is really redundant because burglars, really anyone doing anything action-oriented in media, is presumed to be male. This is equally unacceptable.
