author – activist – faculty – mom
So I’ve finally decided to start blogging. It’s taken me a while to get in the groove of social media, but I’m finally catching up.
No one who’s familiar with my work will be surprised that I’ll be focusing a lot on the politics of media, particularly gender politics. I’ve been developing a bunch of ideas about women and fiction. They include my own novel-in-progress and the work of others, particularly women writers. But I’m also fascinated lately with the writing of television.
I never used to watch television. I thought the West Wing was the wing of a hospital, and didn’t watch it on DVD til the show was off the air (“I don’t like doctor shows – What? It’s about the White House? Why didn’t anybody tell me??”).
Since I became a mom, however, I’ve found myself watching TV shows on the internet while loading the dishwasher, chopping vegetables, making my daughter’s lunch. And I’ve been shocked how many good shows there are, with strong female characters and well-written plots. Of course, many of my favorite shows get cancelled after a season, but others are going strong.
This first series of blog entries will be about television shows, and the next set will focus on fiction.
I’m still figuring out how to connect the blog to the facebook to the twitter to the legbone to the kneebone, but I’m confident that I can get that together soon.
